Will Aluminum Die Casting Products rust?

Aluminum Die Casting itself will not rust like iron or steel; because ‘rust’ is generally the process of oxidation of iron and steel in moist air which forms a red layer of iron oxide (Fe2O3) commonly referred to as ‘rust’. Nonetheless, while the aluminum die castings do not rust, they can corrode if exposed to certain forms of conditions such as moisture, salt, acidic, and alkaline solutions.

It says that the surface of aluminum is covered by a tightly adherent film of aluminum oxide which acts as a protective measure since it cannot allow further exposure of aluminum to oxygen in the air. For that matter, if this film is ruined, for instance through mechanical damage, galvanic corrosion, or chemical reaction, the aluminum die cast will start to rust. Most of the corrosion products of aluminum metal are white but they can be gray or green according to the level of corrosion and the environmental factors prevailing at the site.

How to prevent Aluminum Alloy Die Casting from corroding?

1. Surface treatment: Modify the surface of aluminum die castings to other types of treatments like anodization, plating, painting, or chemical conversion colorfulness treatments to increase the corrosive resistance of the surface. Such as anodizing thickens the hard skin on aluminum oxide, and plating is used to coat with other metals such as zinc or chromium to protect the surface.

2. Use of corrosion-resistant materials: Select the better class of aluminum alloys; it may be noted that additions such as magnesium, silicon copper, etc. can enhance the ability of certain aluminum alloys to withstand corrosion in certain conditions of service.

3. Environmental control: Recommended that aluminum Die Casting Product should not be installed in areas where it will come into contact with humid, salty water or in any environment where corrosive agents are present or take necessary sealing so that they will not come in contact with corrosive media.

4. Regular maintenance: Aluminum die-castings, which have undergone slight corrosion, can be subjected to cleaning and coating of anticorrosion regularly to increase the longevity of the die-castings.
